My favorite piece of music is Beethoven's violin concerto, and my favorite recording of this piece was made with Wolfgang Schneiderhan and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, with Eugen Jochum conducting, in 1962. (The same team also recorded Mozart's fifth violin concerto in 1968, and both recordings were published on a single disc by Deutsche Grammophon, which can be found here.) If you like classical music and you haven't heard this recording, then I highly recommend that you listen to it. I don't think that more beautiful music has ever been recorded. I wanted to include a video clip of the entire third movement from Youtube, but I wasn't able to find one. However, I did manage to find this:
This video contains the cadenzas that Schneiderhan played. They have been lifted out of context, but they are beautiful nonetheless, and they convey something of the power of the full recording.
Here is an excerpt from the first movement:
And here is the entire second movement:
Unfortunately, nothing more than this seems to be available at present.
Hi Leslie,
ReplyDeleteThose are nice! I especially like the second movement, I love the french horns, there's something about the clear sound of the french horn that I just adore. Thanks for sharing those. :)
