I recently discovered a cd of medieval pilgrimage music. It's called On the Way to Bethlehem. I haven't ordered the cd yet, so I can't say much about the history of the pieces, but some of them were clearly written by Eastern European Christians who were making pilgrimage to Jerusalem. It seems that at least some of the songs are improvised from original themes; I don't know how closely the performances match what was written in the Middle Ages, but I would guess that much of the music is authentically medieval. Anyway, I found a few of the tunes on Youtube, and I thought that I would link to them here. I enjoy them a great deal, and I have been listening to them on the Sabbath. Of course, they may not be your cup of tea (my wife doesn't care for them), but what good is a blog if you can't share music on it?
Here is a Croatian piece:
And here is a Bulgarian tune:
By the way, I can't say whether all the songs on the cd are Christian; some may be Jewish or Muslim. However, the songs here are both Christian. I'm not sure how important this is to others - I frequently listen to Jewish music on the Sabbath myself - but I thought that I would mention it anyway.
I hope you enjoy!
